Why are Micro Credentials important for Professional Development?

What are micro credentials and why do we need them?

I’ve been updating my professional certifications and recently completed Managing Successful Programs (MSP) certification (Foundation and Practitioner) in addition to PRINCE2 Agile certification (Foundation and Practitioner).

It’s been 5 years since I posted on Linkedin about my lifelong love of learning when I graduated with a Masters of Commerce from Charles Sturt University. Since then, I’ve also completed an open cabling certification which means I am can install network cables in residential and commercial properties.

I’ve always benefited from part-time study to expand my contemporary knowledge about current best practice and emerging trends and then apply this in the workplace. This helps to keep building skills to drive change and innovation.

What I hadn’t realised is that Authenticated Vocational Education and Training (VET) Transcripts can be shared online using your Unique Student Identifier. This uses the National VET Provider Collection for training undertaken since 1 January 2015.

My Tertiary qualifications were obtained before electronic records were being provided by Australian Universities through My eQuals. So, I still need to continue being able to provide certified copies myself and request replacements from the University if needed.

Micro credentials make providing online access to your current certified credentials a lot easier. Of course, this should not replace quality tertiary education and vocational training but I like it. It’s also more convenient to keep your certification current by logging your professional development although an annual fee might be involved.

Anyway, here are my latest micro credentials for Managing Successful Programs (MSP) Practitioner and Foundation. This time I am going back to renew my professional program management knowledge and practice. Some things have changed, and I am still getting new insights so its good to keep learning. And now I get to apply that knowledge to help build delivery confidence and ensure value!
